Beard Wins Champions Showdown in the Duck Tape Turismo

Footbrake Nationals and Champions Showdown
November 13-14, 2010
Last year, Farmington Dragway started a new tradition of hosting a special Champions Showdown just for Footbrakers, open to everyone that's ever won a Footbrake championship, whether it be a track championship, NHRA or IHRA National or Divisional title, Bracket Finals, or Summit Super Series championship. In the 2nd Annual event, Michael Beard won the Champions Showdown with his Billy Nees Race Cars-prepped Duck Tape 4-cylinder front-wheel drive '85 Turismo! Beard reeled off a string of stellar reaction times to win the title: .006, .001, .013, .012, .069 (Bye), and capped the night with an .015 in the final round over former Farmington Dragway and Mooresville Dragway Champion Tim Byrd.
For his efforts, Beard received the Champions Showdown trophy, commemorative check, a free entry into Sunday's $4,000-to-win Footbrake Nationals, a free entry into next year's Footbrake Nationals, and next year he will also receive 24 of the 2011 Champions Showdown event t-shirts, which will feature this year's winning car: the Duck Tape Turismo!
Ironically, Beard ran Tim Byrd two other times over the course of the weekend, losing with a -.004 foul start in the first round of Saturday's Warmup race, before coming back to defeat him in the Champions Showdown final. On Sunday, in the third round of the Footbrake Nationals, Byrd won the rubber match. Beard had the better of two nearly perfect reaction times, .003 to .006, but dropped a close double-breakout race by nine thousandths of a second.
